Homeopathy for Menopause

Sepia 200 for menopause. Homeopathic remedies for hot flashes

I can not tell you how life-saving homeopathic remedies can be for menopause and perimenopause! And if you have heard about Sepia 200, this is one of the best uses you can give it!

Let's face it if you are a woman, you should expect to have a long relationship with your hormones! From puberty to perimenopause, through menopause and beyond.

Menopause is a transition period for women. During this time, the body is going through erratic hormonal changes were Oestrogen, and Progesterone levels fluctuate frequently giving rise to mood swings, heavy bleeding, hot flushes, bloating and even constipation. Homeopathy has many useful remedies for perimenopause and beyond to alleviate these problems.

Did you know that Oestrogen and Progesterone are the main hormones during menopause?
Many systems of the body are affected by these two hormones alone. During menopause and perimenopause, you may notice several systems of your body being out of balance like your digestive system producing symptoms such as constipation, bloating or slow digestion. Another system that typically gets affected is your cardiovascular system giving rise to hot flashes and vascular changes and urinary system. Learn how to deal with urinary problems at recurrent cystitis in another blog.

And to help you understand how this can be linked together, I may mention that hormones are metabolised in the liver. So yes! this organ is crucial during menopause and needs to be in good working order to help break down hormones after the body has used them. And guess what?  that is why homeopathic remedies for liver support during this time are often indicated.

Oestrogen and Progesterone are the main hormones relating to menopause, and these are some of the functions associated with them:
Homeopathy for Menopause and Perimenopause
 OESTROGEN
  • affects cognitive function and mood
  • improves sleep
  • affects energy
  • lubricated vaginal tissues
  • helps maintain healthy bones by preventing calcium loss
  • keeps cholesterol in control
  • protects against heart disease
 PROGESTERONE
  • contributes to efficient use of fat as a source of energy
  • increases libido
  • it is a diuretic
  • enhances sensitivity to thyroid function
  • improves sensitivity to insulin
  • it builds bones
  • benefits the cardiovascular system by blocking plaque formation

Can you see how many of the symptoms experienced relate to hormonal fluctuations around this time? So when working with homeopathy during menopause, the aim is to work with homeopathic remedies that have an affinity to these systems of the body to help relieve symptoms and at the same time, to help regulate hormones.

And of course, you may have heard of Sepia or Lachesis as some of the homeopathic remedies during menopause! Those are great remedies and top remedies when working with the Banerji Protocols.

I will show you some of the most indicated homeopathic remedies for perimenopause and menopause!

THE BEST HOMEOPATHIC REMEDIES FOR MENOPAUSE

1- HOMEOPATHIC REMEDIES FOR HOT FLUSHES

One of the body's central systems affected during this transition time is the cardiovascular system.
Hot flushes and night sweats develop after decreasing oestrogen levels, causing the hypothalamus to become more sensitive or glitchy in how it senses temperature. As a result, your blood vessels near the skin widen to cool off producing this sensation of heat and braking into sweats. Some women can also experience palpitations with it.

Lachesis 200c
This is one of the most useful homeopathic remedies during menopause for hot flushes. This remedy has an affinity to the ovaries, circulation and the cutaneous and vasomotor nerves two areas that are typically affected at this time. This is a remedy were affections are worse at the climacteric period ( menopausal) and for retarded discharges ( missing your periods).
However, if you still have periods, your symptoms will improve as soon as bleeding starts.

It is specially indicated for waking up with hot flashes at night and breaking out in sweats or hot flushes during the day and cold flashes on retiring at night.
Hot flashes that start on the body and travel up to the head. You can feel nauseous and even dizzy with your hot flashes or even have palpitations.

Some women may experience heavy bleeding and prolonged periods as part of their picture.

This remedy is complementary to Lycopodium, often an indicated remedy during menopause.
Sulphur 200
This remedy helps with irregular distribution of circulation that causes congestion and flashes of heat. It helps with ascending sensations of heat that settle in the head's top and burning heat in the hands and feet.
Again, this is a top remedy for affections at climaxis ( menopause), and it is on the first line of the Banerji Protocols.

Like Lachesis, you may be waking up at night with heat and sweats, but You may become bright red on the face and feel very hot in your feet as well needing to take them out of bed.

The menses may still happening but have become erratic or have stopped and created congestion in the body.

The genital area can become itchy and sore.

Aconite is an acute of Sulphur, and it is often indicated if you are experiencing palpitations. You can take this remedy ( Aconite 200) twice daily or SOS.

Sepia 200
One of the most indicated homeopathic remedies for Perimenoupause and during menopause. It acts on the venous circulation and has an affinity to the female organs.
A feeling of weakness and sweat can accompany the hot flashes of Sepia; you may feel more tired with all of your symptoms.

You may feel hot and cold all day.

This is a complementary remedy to Sulphur that can follow each other well.

These remedies can be taken one dose every 3rd day for several months.

2- CONSTIPATION AND DIGESTIVE SYMPTOMS

Sepia 200
People needing this remedy may be suffering from constipation feeling like pressure in the rectum as from a ball. Feeling like full in the rectum even after passing the stool.

There is a feeling of inactivity of the rectum in severe cases where you can go days without having the urge to go.

Chronic and obstinate constipation.

Sepia is the chronic of Nux vomica and an acute of Alumina.
When the Sepia constipation is so obstinate that there is no desire to go at all for many days, a few doses of Alumina 200 may be helpful.
Sepia is also helpful when Nux vomica helps with constipation but stops assisting. Often, the chronic relation of Nux vomica, Sepia, will relieve constipation.
Take this remedy one dose every 3rd day.

Nux vomica 30
Constipation is felt with an urge to pass the stool, but straining produces only a few hard stools.

Cramping pains and sore bowels tend to accompany constipation, resulting from irregular peristalsis and a congested liver.

Haemorrhoids can also appear with constipation.

Take this remedy twice daily.

Have a look here to other remedies for constipation.

Homeopathy for Hot flushes
Lycopodium 200
Lycopodium has an affinity to the digestive system producing symptoms of weakness of digestion. It is excellent liver support much needed during the transition years and is aggravated by suppression of the menses.

For bloating and constipation, general discomfort of the digestive system.
Feeling very bloated, especially after eating with slow digestion and lots of gas.

Take this remedy twice daily.

Nux vomica is an acute of Lycopodium.

Natrum Muritaticum 200c
This remedy's constipation comes with bloating and gurgling or the bowels; there is a tendency to pass stools once every 3rd or every other day.

3-HEADACHES

BANERJI PROTOCOL HEADACHE

4- UNDERACTIVE THYROID

BANERJI PROTOCOL HYPOTHYROIDISM
  • Bromium 6c twice daily
  • Lycopodium 30c twice daily

5- OSTEOPOROSIS

Bone health starts to decrease after menopause due to the decrease of oestrogen. Oestrogen helps to prevent calcium loss, so as a supplement, it is a good idea to take:

-Calc Phos 3x twice daily for several months
It is a good idea to take this tissue cell salts only to supplement your calcium loss.

If you are told that bone density is low and diagnosed with osteoporosis after a bone scan, you can take the following protocol.

BANERJI PROTOCOL OSTEOPOROSIS
  • Calc Phos 3x twice daily ( two pills as a dose)
  • Symphytum 200 twice daily
lachesis heavy bleeding

5-HEAVY OR PROLONGED BLEEDING

As you approach menopause, sometimes the ovaries' egg is not realised, but your ovary continues producing oestrogen. This means that there is not enough Progesterone to counteract oestrogen given rise to heavy periods. Your oestrogen levels become higher than your progesterone levels.
For the irregularities of bleeding, there are a few remedies that can be helpful.
If your period has finished but you still spotting, you can take
  • Arnica 3c one dose every 3 hours until it stops
If you are experiencing menorrhagia every month
  • Ammonium Carbonicum 200c every ten days
or
  • Caulophyllum 200c twice daily
To help during the bleeding period
  • Sabina 6c every 3 hours
  • Sabina 6c+ Arnica 3c for heavy bleeding with clotting.

After having had months of heavy bleeding, you can experience a decrease in iron in your blood. You can add the following Banerji Protocol for anaemia.

Thank you Cristina!
How often should these remedies especially Lachesis be used?

Is Ammonium carbonicum also a good one in transitioning into menopause?

The dosing is on the blog for each remedy.

For Anmmonium Carbonicum I would say more for menopause but can be used before also. It depends on the case.

Could Ammonium Carbonicum also be used when one has been on HRT (hormone replacement therapy) since 8 years, but the night sweats and hot flashes return as strong as in the beginning, as soon as I try to stop the HRT? or, are these protocols only useful at the beginning when one is going into menopause. I am 62

No! any of this remedies would be relevant at any stage. Any of the remedies of the sections can be used at any stage even after menopause if finished but those symptoms remain.

Thank you for sharing this Wonderful article but I guess you already know Perimenopause has so many more terrible symptoms Sleep is a big one due to drastic hormones fluctuations, so Sleep n Aches n Pains n whatever else you can please address in this 40 to 60 years transition time would be greatly appreciated🙏..

`Manisha, by addressing the hormones the sleep will be restored, so the work needs to start there. For remedies that help sleep, have a look at my other blog.https://www.villacortahomeopath.com/blog/insomnia-how-to-get-back-to-sleep-with-these-useful-natural-remedies

I am familiar with Kali Mur/Ferr Phos 3x combination for anemia. But, I have seen a Banerji protocol somewhere that also includes Nat Phos. What is the rationale for the Nat Phos addition? Is this still relevant for anemia? Thank you

I can not comment on that protocol as I don't have any background to why it was put together or suggested and if it part of the BP. For anemia, use this protocol.

I have reread several times searching for dosing info for Lachesis but it doesn’t seem to be here as it is for most other remedies. I have been postmenopausal for several years but still have hot flushes as I go to sleep and right after I wake in the morning. I’ve been on Sepia 200C every 3 days for many months but it’s only helped vaginal dryness not the darned hot flushes! I read Lachesis can help with waking up with anxiety (which I have terribly) but now that I know it can also help the hot flushes - awesome! Knock out two issues, hopefully! Just need to know how often to take it.

I asked about Lachesis dosing but I think I just figured it out. Sepia, Sulphur, Lachesis....each have dosing of e3D? After reading a third time I think I got it...?

That's correct Laura! one dose every 3rd day. Sorry, I may have missed your question. I sometimes do a more frequent repetition of those remedies depending on the symptoms but to start with for general use one dose every 3rd day is a good pace.

That's totally fine Alex. I don't give any restrictions of any kind to patients and the remedies work just as well. This is what we were taught in our training and when we started to practice, we tend to go along with what we learn. But with clinical experience you test out this theories and in practice ( or at least myself, I can not speak for others) , I have never seen a problem myself, so much that I do not restrict it from my own patients.

Just found your website and am very excited to get relief. I’m 59 and have gone through menopause quite some time ago. The hot flashes have never gone away. Just started taking Sepia 200 for that. What I mostly suffer from now is terrible vaginal dryness to the point of terrible sharp pain during sex with my husband. It’s very troubling. Will the Sepia help with that? Thank you.

I am kind of confused which remedy to take. I am many years post menopausal but my hot flashes and feeling lethargic and long standing digestive issues (bloating and gas) have never gone away.
would Sulphur or Lachesis work? what would be the main difference between these two? Can I take both?
I tried sepia, but I think this one didn't suit me. My muscles started to ache all over and I felt extremely lethargic, and not well.

I would advice to use the recommended potencies 3x, those are the ones that produced better results for the Banerjies and I can also see that in my practice.

No, homeopathic remedies do not work in that way as they are based on energy principles. They do not contain any material doses that could affect the physical body.

You can take it for as long as needed. You will need to reassess if it is working or not and decide if continue with the remedy. If you are using it for headaches and the headaches are gone, then yes you stop taking it.

No Rachel, the 3x can not be extended or grafted as it is in trituration. You need to take the tablets. That is the only potency that you need to take dry, you should not make it liquid.

Would Sepia be best for a woman whose cycle had always been regular but since the age of 42 it has been not normal. 2 or 3 months with no period and then 2 periods in 1 month. Hypothyroidism is also a factor being treated with Armour thyroid.
Thank you far any insight.

When there is more than one chronic health issue like in your case Hypothyroidism and irregular cycles, you will need to address different layers to move the case. Probably this two are related.

Do you have any specific remedies that address sudden weight gain with menopause, or do the remedies you listed deal with that as well? Thank you!

Reply
Cristina
12/17/2021 06:08:27 pm

This is a request that even some of my own patients ask! and to be honest, there is no remedy that will help you "loose weight" during or after menopause ( unless that this is due to atrophy of the thyroid which can happen during that time and in that case, this is what needs to be treated). Weight gain during menopause is a biological mechanism to ensure that we have enough reserves of fat where estrogen is produced and stored during this transition period where your natural production of this hormone is reduced. So unfortunately for us women, visceral weight gain during menopause is not pathology but an evolutionary advantage to human survival, and one that you can not fight off!! Of course treating hormonal imbalance during menopause will aid weight balance but it will not stop you from gaining weight at this time. Careful eating and exercise or becoming more active will also be needed to decrease those extra Kg piled up during peri or menopause. I wish there would be a secret remedy, I would be the first one to take it!!

Cristina, in the Banerji protocol book, for hypothyroidism, I noted the bromium 6c and lycopodium 30c, but it lists the latter in liquid. I don’t see that specified here on your blog. I had both in pellet form ready to take at home so that’s what I’ve done. But I know when there is something specific on a Banerji protocol, there is a good reason for it. So now that I have sourced lycopodium in liquid, I assume that’s absolutely what I should do to expect the assumed results? I’m just curious why it was not specified to take the lycopodium in liquid form here? Because if it’s just as efficacious not in liquid form, I’d like to know that, too. Thanks. (Also, when I did a general search for Banerji protocols and hypothyroidism, it actually comes up with the bromium 6C and thyroidinum 200c. I would love clarification.

The protocol will also work if you take it dry, don't worry. I have often prescribed the dry doses and it has worked well. But if you want to be specific, make it liquid.

There are different variations of protocols but if you are not a homeopath, stick to the exact protocols of the book. As I said many times, the protocols are not just mechanic, you need to understand them to work with them and know which combination you could add or change.

I am glad you enjoy my blogs and are helpful for you!

Regarding your question, you should continue with the prescribed medication, you should not stop that. Homeopathy works alongside prescribe medicine and if the protocol is working for you, in time, your blood-work should show a change in your thyroid levels. At this point, your doctor may suggest to decrease the medication and see how you get on. But all of this needs to be done by your doctor that follows your blood and thyroid levels every few months. When working with pathology with the Banerji Protocols, it is important that you have the regular check ups to see any variations on those levels.
