SOOTHE ACID REFLUX, heartburn AND GERD WITH HOMEOPATHY

Would you like to learn how to treat acid reflux, Gerd and heartburn with homeopathic remedies?

Acid reflux seems to have 100 different names, 100 different medications and always seems to pop up at the worst times.
Gastroesophageal reflux disease, acid reflux, heartburn… Gaviscon, Lansoprazole, Omeprazole, Zantac, Tums…..Just finished a nice meal… here it is! Bent down and picked something up off the floor…. Surprise! Or even just lying down…

Acid reflux is one of the most common gut complaints seen by hospital departments, something which I can definitely agree with, as I see it over and over again in my practice!

It is caused by a weak lower oesophagal sphincter ( which is like a ring of muscle), that allows the stomach contents to flow back up the oesophagus and into the gullet, the oesophagal sphincter normally acts as a one-way valve that lets food into the stomach but not back up into the oesophagus.

This is because the stomach contains hydrochloric acid which is used to help us break down food and protect against pathogens
!

Therefore when the acid flows back up to the oesophagus it causes a burning sensation, whereas it does not in the stomach as the stomach has a strong lining which protects it.

But if you are looking for remedies for indigestion only, have a look at my other blog here.

Picture
This reflux of acid can lead to lots of common symptoms such as difficulty swallowing, vomiting or burning sensations. But interestingly it can also cause symptoms that my patients don't even realise are related to it.

For example, did you know that it can cause dry coughs, asthma like breathing difficulties, dental erosion, throat problems or even bad breath!

Even more interestingly for me, digestion is part of the parasympathetic nervous system ( also known as the rest and digest)  which works at its optimum when the body is at REST.

This is why when our bodies are under stress and the fight or flight reflex kicks in, peristalsis is stopped, to allow our bodies to focus on what is most important at the time- historically to confront or avoid the danger!

Isn't the human body AMAZING!

This is also why you may find a loss of appetite or difficulty eating if you feel anxious or stressed. Therefore in my practice I see a lot of people that are in high-stress environments or have demanding jobs experience acid reflux.

All of this sounds very unpleasant, so I bet you're wondering… Cristina what can I do about it?

Well, the good news is that as it is such a common problem, homeopathy has a good rate of success with it!

HOMEOPATHIC REMEDIES TO HELP YOU TACKLE ACID REFLUX AND HEARTBURN AND ENJOY FOOD AGAIN!

LYCOPODIUM 30/200
This is the #1 remedy for acid reflux and indigestion. This remedy has a strong affinity to the digestive tract and especially the liver, making it a fantastic remedy for digestive disturbances. You can read all about liver support with homeopathic remedies to aid detoxification here in this blog.

It is no wonder why the Banerjies use this remedy as a first, second or 3rd line in most of their digestive protocols.

If you need this remedy you will find that you suffer from acidity and the acid goes up to the throat and burns for hours. It feels better if you can belch.

You can suffer from pain in the stomach that is burning, gripping and clutching that extends to below the ribs and into the back.

It tends to be accompanied by lots of flatulence that feels as if you are full. You may find yourself unbuttoning your trousers around the waist area. Feeling tight as from a cord in the upper part of the abdomen.

You tend to suffer from chronic dyspepsia and may suffer from constipation, although this not always the case.

NUX VOMICA 30
If you need this remedy, your heartburn may be worse before breakfast.

Feeling of rancid heartburn taste.

A feeling of nausea in the stomach with the acidity.

Your acidity on the stomach will be worse by drinking coffee, having alcohol, overeating or taking prescription drugs such as paracetamol or any other medicine. However, fats can be well tolerated.

People needing this remedy tend to suffer from indigestion and acidity which is related to stress at work with anxiety. This can happen after a period of a lot of work, or too many projects where you feel stretched.

ARSENICUM ALBUM 30C
The keynote of this remedy is "burning pains" and this is what your stomach will feel like -"burning as from red- hot coals".

The burning is in the stomach and the pit of the stomach and it goes up to the throat.

Heartburn gulping up acid and bitter substances that makes the throat raw.

You will feel better from the acidity in the stomach by drinking milk. Also, stomach pain or acidity can be relieved by drinking hot drinks or food.

The heartburn may come up at night, after midnight and disturb your sleep.

BANERJI PROTOCOL TIP

The Banerjies use
  • Lycopodium 200 one dose every 3rd day
  • Arsenicum 3c two doses daily for as a first line for most gastric problems such as acidity or dyspepsia.
How to soothe GERD and heartburn
Picture
ROBINIA 30
This is a very small remedy but very useful for acidity and heartburn. Its primary action is the secretions of the stomach.

The main pointer to this remedy is heartburn and acidity which is worse on lying down at night.

The acidity of this remedy is felt as sour belching and sour acrid secretions.  Very much acid dyspepsia.

If you have tried a few remedies and have not helped, this is a very good option.

IRIS VERSICOLOR 200
This is another excellent remedy for GERD and it is one of the main Banerji Protocol for this condition.

The acidity of this remedy feels sour, acrid and burning.  You may also experience beating, throbbing in and about the heart and sternum.

You may feel burning in your whole alimentary canal.

You may have more of these episodes of acidity during the Spring and Autumn or they may come every month for 2-3 days.

The acidity may be accompanied by a frontal headache sometimes.

NATRUM PHOS 30C
This remedy is especially useful for babies that overfeed on milk and spit up sour vomit. These babies may be diagnosed with silent reflux or reflux.

The vomit may be so sour, curdled and that smells like vinegar.

This is also a very good remedy for acidity felt for those that suffer from a peptic ulcer or duodenum ulcer.

Again, if the person vomits, it may be sour and vinegar like.

Take these remedies twice daily.

BANERJI PROTOCOL TIP

For GERD and Silent Reflux (LPR) the Banerjies use:
  • Iris Versicolor 200 in liquid two doses daily before food
  • Lycopodium 30 in liquid two doses daily

Great blog Cristina- excellent articles across all categories!

It would be most appreciated if you would advise whether the Banjeri protocol for GERD would also be applicable for Laryngopharyngeal reflux (LPR) otherwise known as 'Silent Reflux' due to low stomach acid?

Thank you Rose! I am glad you enjoy them and are useful as well. You can use that one or the one with Lycopodium 200 and Arsen 3c , if the other one does not give you good results.

I was just prescribed Iris Vesicolor 200 from the Banerji clinic. I have GERD and suspect an ulcer of some kind due to pain under my left rib. I was under the impression homeopathy wouldn't cause any negative symptoms, but it seems to make my stomach hurt after taking it. Is this normal?

I guess you were prescribed that for reflux but If you suspect an ulcer, then you need get a diagnostic to get the right protocol. The Banerjies would have prescribed with the information you gave them only. No, the remedies are unlikely to be the source of that pain, as you say, there may be something else going on and your body is letting you know.

I have had a similar pain. More gallbladder and liver associated. I use milk thistle MT and Boiron chelidonium 6c twice a day and had some relief very quickly. Simple to try.

hi, Cristina, my husband has been having awful stomach related cough for years, he definitely has high acidity and GERD but traditional medicines don't help (he tried a lot!) and doctors can not find the exact reason. A diet affects his cough significantly (coffee, tomatoes, citrus, chocolate cause immediate harsh reaction) but even being quite conservative and eating bland food he experiences terrifying cough attacks. Once, such cough attack ended with coughing blood out (sorry for such details). Fortunately, it has not happened again but I am afraid it might. I have been doubtful about homeopathy but I guess we have no choice since traditional medicine does not help. Could you recommend any treatment, please? and is it possible to buy it in the US? In addition, it seems (and my ENT doctor agrees) that I have LPR. However, neither of us has heartburn. We are ready to explore and try homeopathy, step by step. Do you have any suggestions? thank you.

Excellent writeup!
I probably have LPR as my laryngoscopy got nothing. Since I have chronic post nasar drip and sore throat without hearburn but with gas in stomach, my ENT said it was an LPR. I believe homeopathic medicine is based on body's constitution. So, how will I find out what is right remedy for me?

There are many ways of working with homeopathy, the body's constitution is one of the approaches although not the only one. In my experience, a constitutional remedy is not always able to clear the problem, if a case has many layers ( as most cases have) you need to navigate through them. The Banerjes provide a short cut for many conditions. I personally do not agree with the "right remedy". You can read here why. https://www.villacortahomeopath.com/blog/the-banerji-protocols

This is great information, as I have LPR and heartburn at times. I additionally have a hiatal hernia which is a concern now. I was looking for something about hiatal hernia, but did not see it in your recommendations. Is there anything you or the Banjeri protocol recommends. Thank you so much for sharing your expertise.

Is there a Banjeri protocol tip for GI issues that crop up after a course of antibiotics? It's been six months since I took the antibiotics for a surgery and have had GI issues, and it's exaserpated both my GERD, LPR and hernia. I am wondering if I need to address the antibiotic aftermath issue first and/or separately or just use the recommendations posted here for GERD and LPR. Thank you.

That is telling you something else, a full case taking and proper medical diagnostic is needed to work on that particular problem in this case. But for sure some liver support is needed for that person.

Does Robinia increase stomach acid?
In the US, most integrative health practitioners believe GERD is associated with low, Rather than high acidity.
I feel mine is low. Also my Reflux is triggered by gas: I get a lot of flatulence (even with avoidance of beans, cabbage family food...)
I am very vata but carminative herbs have not helped much.
Please let me know.

Cristina

In homeopathic potency, Robinia helps to balance the acidity of the stomach. Homeopathic remedies act as balancers, do not give or take anything as they do not contain anything physical.

Hello, Thank you for your great help.
I have the Banerji protocol book but I have an issue.

I hope you can help me.

I want to start the protocol for GERD, or acid reflux.
The problem I have is:
HOW LONG do I have to take the remedies?
it is not anywhere written for how many days/weeks one is supposed to take the 1st line of medicines?
only the daily repetition is listed, but not how long one is supposed to take them.
Please advise

Reply
Cristina
11/7/2020 05:48:35 pm

Take the lines as prescribed for 2 months and you should be able to assess if the remedies are working. Then you would need to decide if that line is helping so you can continue or you need to change to other remedies.

Hi Christina,
thank you for the wonderful help you provide.

I have another question regarding the LPR or Gerd protocol.

in the Banerji book the protocol for Acid reflux is to take Lycopodium 200c + Iris versicolor 200 c TWICE a day. I find this is a very frequent repetition for a 200C remedy.

On your website for acid reflux, you advise to take Lycopodium 200c every 3th day, which makes much more sense.
Can you please verify which one would be better for LPR disease?
lycopodium 200c twice a day OR only once every 3th day?

besides that, if one does not have the lycopodium in liquid, is it possible to take the pellet form of 200c also?

Thank you

Yes, there are good remedies for reflux on the blog! but the case together with the food intolelances indicate that there are other layers to treat and that will not be covered by the reflux protocols. You need to see homeopathy as a process and in order to work a case like this, you need a bit of patience, at least a few appointments to start to see changes. This is why you will be disappointed if you are looking for a remedy or prescription that will heal everything, it does not happen like this, it is more like a series of prescriptions or protocols working together unfolding the case. All the best with your son's health and I hope all of this is helpful!

Is it possible to take only Lycopodium 200 without either Arsenicum album or Iris versicolor because there is really no burning throughout the alimentary canal or other burning as is described by these two meds. there is only slight sourness in the throat, due to LPR, but not a lot of burning anywhere esle? There is only lots of bloating and gas with stomach/intestinal pain, so, could one also take Nux Vomica, (due to gastric issues due to stress/anxiety), along with the Lycopodium ? (not together) or is this not advisable?

Reply
Cristina

yes, that is ok and you can take both Lycopodium and Nux Vomica in the same prescription, that is not problem at all. They are both complementary remedies.

The Banerji protocol for LPR (silent reflux) is Lycopodium 30 twice a day and Iris versicolor 200 twice a day before food. My question is: do these have to be taken together or taken separately by 15 min. or so? what if one eats 3 or more meals a day? is the Iris versicolor still only be taken twice a day?

Hi Cristina. I had a question for you. I have silent reflux, and recently messaged the Banerji clinic to get some help. Although they took awhile to get back to me, they were so helpful and provided me with a protocol for my reflux -- it was Nat. Phos 30C mixed with Arsenicum 3C. I was wondering -- do you have any thoughts on whether the Iris-Lyco protocol is used in some cases and the Nat. Phos. protocol is used in other cases?

Reply
Cristina
4/4/2021 02:35:59 pm

Yes, different remedies in the protocols suit better certain symptoms. However, you need to have a good understanding of materia medica and homeopathy as a whole to understand the protocols and the different lines. It depends on the patient and the symptoms and their case, I am sure they gave you the best matching combination for your description of symptoms on the email. The protocols are dynamic, the work on systems of the body, that is what most people do not realise, they are not always applied mechanically. I hope you get better soon.

My saliva is ok during the day, but very acidic overnight. (I test it in the morning) It is damaging my teeth. Which remedy could help? Thanks a lot. Lucie

My child is non verbal and I am not sure about all the symptoms he may experience but his GERD is accompanied with strong and retching nausea, salivation and lack of sleep and the symptoms come and go, like he has them for 4-5 days later on they disappear for a while and come back again. Symptoms are worse after eating too. Are Iris Versicolor 200 and Natrium Phosphoricum 30 suitable for his case please? Thank you so much! Bless you!

Hi, thanks for your info. I'm questioning about a 1 month old who has bad reflux, spitting up, gas, colic that is much worse at night & leads to restless sleep. Her symptoms are most likely due to oral ties, I was told that these homeopathic pills would not benefit her because the reflux is not a digestive issue but an oral tie issue. Do you agree? Or what are your thoughts on that? Also, I was told that a newborn's gut is being established & only breastmilk should be going in their mouth & potentially would not be able to handle these supplements.

I don't think that Reflux is caused by oral ties, you should consult a paediatrician to help you understand why your son in experiencing those symptoms. Homeopathy is safe for mother and child, there is no risk at all to take homeopathic remedies but as I can see you are unsure, my advice is that you work with a homeopath rather than self prescribe. Homeopathy works well along conventional medicine also, so you have a lop of options to help your child.
